Trend Watch: Adding Color to Your Kitchen

While all-white kitchens remain popular, check out any website, magazine, or TV show devoted to remodeling and design and you’ll find one colorful kitchen after another.

Color adds visual interest and enables you to add your own style and favorite hues to a room that really is the heart of your home. Whether you’re considering a full renovation or simply looking to freshen up your kitchen, using color is a great way to make your kitchen uniquely yours.

Cabinets in Color

One of the best ways to bring color into your kitchen is through your cabinets. Painted wood cabinets, especially in otherwise white kitchens, create focal points. The top colors for painted cabinets are blues, from dusky to bright, and greens from dark pine to bright granny smith apple.

If that much color seems a little audacious, try a mix — color on the bottom cabinets, with white or gray on wall cabinets. Designers love to do this to break up a monotone cabinet scheme and add visual dimension.

Island Style

Consider a different color or material on your island contrasting with your cabinet colors. A washed wood in any tone will add a pop of color or texture to an otherwise all-white or all-wood array of cabinets.

Mix Neutrals

If too much color seems, well, woo much, mixing white and light or dark gray is a crisp and on-trend look. Pale tones like creamy tans will also up the style factor without too much contrast.

Counter Offer

Mixing countertop materials, colors, and tones to complement or contrast with your cabinets, flooring, and aplliances is another way to add dimension to your kitchen as a whole. An island can be topped in butcher block, for example, while the counters on top of floor cabinets can be stone or composite.

Add Accents

You don’t have to tackle a full kitchen remodel to add color. Consider where you can add pops throughout — maybe bright new stools at your counter, or a coat of paint on the walls.
