This remodeling project transformed this property inside and out, creating spaces for living, entertaining, and housing overnight guests in style and comfort.
Our clients own two houses next door to each other. Through new construction, remodeling of existing spaces, and an extensive overhaul of the outdoor areas, they now have a united, cohesive property that meets all their wants and needs beautifully.
As part of their business, our clients welcome and entertain out-of-town visitors regularly. They also love to have staff get-togethers and hold large events. To accommodate all of these activities, as well as everyday living, one house was designated as the family’s home and the other provides living space and entertainment areas for guests. The challenge was to create a look and feel for both that melded them all into one seamless whole.

The Outside
To visually unite the two properties, the exterior spaces got completely overhauled. One of the homes was entirely renovated on the outside, including the addition of a new front porch. Traditional decking was removed and replaced, with expansive covered patio areas.
For the family home, an outdoor kitchen under open-air roofing gives them space for the everyday luxury of cooking and dining al fresco! The existing two-sided fireplace keeps the space cozy on chilly fall afternoons and evenings while watching football or a movie at night on the flat-screen TV.
The guest quarters gets its own covered cooking and eating area. Both have cooling ceiling fans to keep the air moving on hot days and nights. To create natural gathering spots for larger crowds, there are covered seating and lounging areas around the outdoor fireplaces, as well as around open-air water features and a dramatic fire/water feature.
Our clients love cars and auto sports, so the existing garages got their own transformations. One grew from one-and-a-half bays to a full two-car garage on the family home.
The other was turned into an entertainment hub. There’s a catering kitchen fully equipped to feed a crowd at large get-togethers, as well as an indoor golf simulator, perfect for practicing on cold, rainy days or holding longest-drive contests as part of the fun. A new four-bay garage was added to house the homeowners’ designer and show cars. A glass garage door opens to the rear to one of the outdoor fireplace seating areas.
Landscaping and pathways were designed to unite the outdoor space, with small gathering spaces around the fire features to encourage mingling and great flow for events.
The Inside
No entertaining space would be complete without a home bar worthy of the finest mixologist. With all the new outdoor gathering spaces, we got to steal a little space for a home sports bar with a car-racing them by enclosing a back patio area. This fun and functional pub is filled with unique design features, including a car hood on the bar back framing the flat-screen TV, and cabinets with a tire-tread pattern. Race memorabilia as part of the decor scheme completes the look. We also added a full bath to the interior.
A Big Job
This was a huge undertaking for our team, and we didn’t do it alone. This project could not have come together and had such amazing results without the talents and hard work of interior designer Susan Lowery, landscape architect Myers + Co., architect Gant Jones, our vendors, and our own network of trusted trade partners. We’d also like to thank our clients for trusting us to bring this dream remodeling project to life.
This transformation earned the 2019 SMC Award of Excellence for Best Remodel Design from the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville.
